Oak and Ivy Collection

Meet Lauren and Janell, best friends and the designers behind Oak and Ivy Collection. These two moms have an eye for design and an understanding of the importance of creating a home that fits the family inside. We are excited to bring you this EFL Q&A featuring this design team from San Diego, CA.

As designers, we know how important it is for a space to reflect our clientele’s individual style while remaining true to our vision.

Q: How long have you been an interior designer? How long have you been designing as a team?

Oak & Ivy Team: We worked as independent designers for the last three years and joined forces one year ago to create Oak & Ivy Collection. Having two sets of eyes and balancing each other's design choices is such an advantage, that we cannot imagine going back to designing independently. And who wouldn't want to work with your best friend?

Q: What is your design aesthetic?

Oak & Ivy Team: We are both drawn to a modern organic aesthetic. We love clean and airy homes which fold in layers to make each space feel warm and inviting. As designers, we know how important it is for a space to reflect our clientele's individual style while remaining true to our vision. As was the case for this home, the client wanted a California coastal cottage feel, so we minimized contrast and kept our palette light and bright, while still weaving in texture.

Q: Who do you offer your design services to?

Oak & Ivy Team: We have both commercial and residential clients. Designing for cafes, families and businesses keeps our workflow diversified which makes each day exciting and new.

Q: Where do you get inspiration for designs?

Oak & Ivy Team: Living in San Diego, we pull inspiration from so many niche neighborhoods in our surroundings. Whether visiting a vintage book shop in North Park, grabbing coffee at an intimate café in Mission Hills, buying flowers from a local florist in Rancho Santa Fe or pursuing a coastal boutique in Solana Beach- there is inspiration to be found throughout the day. We also draw inspiration from the architectural style of each client’s home. And of course we are straight-up Instagram design stalkers!!

Q: Who is this space for?

Oak & Ivy Team: This space is for a young active surfing family. Seeing how this family has two young boys and two small dogs, we wanted to ensure their home was functional in addition to being beautiful. For the dining room, this space needed to be versatile as a flex space used for hosting, school-work and family game night.

Q: How long did this space take to complete?

Oak & Ivy Team: We finished the whole house renovation in approximately 8 weeks.

Q: What is one element you love in this space the most?

Oak & Ivy Team: The Devon table is our favorite element in this space because the 54" round table can extend into an oval for times when family and friends join the party.
